Getting Started

What type of guitar should I start with?

The guitar you have access to! While cheaper guitars are generally more difficult to play, it’s better to choose a well-known brand. Fender's Squier Series and Yamaha's acoustic models are great options for beginners at an affordable price point.

How often should I practice, and for how long?

Practicing at least once between lessons for 30 minutes will drastically improve your playing over time.

How long will it take me to play songs?

Depending on the genre and song, it can take anywhere from 15 minutes to several months of practice. For example, most beginners can learn AC/DC's Back in Black in about a lesson, but learning solos like Hotel California can take longer, depending on your skill level.

Do I need to learn to read music?

Learning through guitar tabs is generally more intuitive and easier for beginners.

What equipment do I need to start?

You’ll need a guitar, an extra set of strings, and a tuner. Picks are optional.

Technique and Skill Development

How do I play without my fingers hurting?

There are techniques to make guitar playing easier and less painful. Building calluses through regular playing is the best way to prevent finger pain.

How do I improve my timing?

Use a metronome and play along with backing tracks.

How can I improve my finger speed?

Picking is almost always the aspect holding players back. Check out this video for tips.

How do I know if I'm strumming correctly?

Pay attention to strumming patterns, dynamics, and rhythm.

What is the best way to memorize chords?

Muscle memory and consistent practice are key!

Theory and Musical Concepts

Do I need to learn music theory?

Music theory is crucial for understanding a song's complexities and reaching a deeper mastery of the guitar. Without it, you may plateau due to a lack of technical knowledge regarding the fretboard and chord transitions. However, for beginners, theory can be optional and is sometimes overwhelming.

What scales should I start with?

Begin with the major scale, minor scale, and the minor pentatonic scale in the first position.

How do I improvise a solo?

To start improvising solos in blues, especially in E minor, understanding scale usage within a key is key. For a blues solo in E minor, the E minor pentatonic scale is a great foundation. This scale includes the notes E, G, A, B, and D, creating a bluesy, expressive sound perfect for solos. You can enhance the bluesy feel by adding in some notes from the E blues scale, which adds a blue note (the flat 5, or Bb) to the minor pentatonic. As you practice, try different phrasing and bending techniques to bring out the emotional quality of each note. To practice over a backing track, try out this E minor blues backing track on YouTube. How do I understand key signatures and chord progressions?

Learning the basics of music theory and harmony will help.

What’s the difference between major and minor chords?

Understanding tonal differences will give insight into the emotional feel of the music.

Song Learning and Style

Can you teach me to play [specific song]?

My lessons are designed around teaching songs that students enjoy, with explanations of the theory behind them. Each lesson is tailored to the student’s goals and needs.

How do I play along with other musicians?

Practicing with backing tracks and a metronome will make it easier to play with a live drummer or other musicians.

How do I create my own music?

Start with lyrics or a riff, structure the song, and build chords you enjoy. This video can offer additional guidance.

Gear and Sound

What guitar gear should I invest in as I improve?A good amp is more essential than an expensive guitar. However, it’s important to have a guitar that inspires you to play and is comfortable for practice.

What’s the best way to record my guitar? An audio interface with an amplifier simulator on a laptop and a DAW is an excellent way to start recording.
